Affiliate Network Comparison: Impact, Awin, CJ, ShareASale, and Rakuten

Choosing the right affiliate network is a program infrastructure decision that affects publisher recruitment reach, tracking quality, commission management, and monthly platform costs for years. Here's an honest comparison of the major networks with specific guidance on which fits which program profile.

Network Comparison

01

Impact (formerly Impact Radius)

Impact is the market leader for mid-market and enterprise affiliate programs, with the most sophisticated tracking and partnership management infrastructure available: Strengths: Superior partnership management interface — Impact's platform is designed for managing complex partner relationships, not just tracking clicks and conversions; it supports media partners, influencers, B2B partners, and traditional affiliates in a single platform. Most accurate cross-device and mobile attribution tracking — Impact's tracking uses a combination of cookie-based and probabilistic methods that outperform most network solutions for mobile and cross-device journeys. Real-time reporting — Impact's analytics are near-real-time, unlike some networks that report on 24-48 hour delays. Publisher marketplace quality — Impact's publisher marketplace tends toward professional and mid-to-large publishers rather than thin affiliates, with a higher-quality recruitment pool for established programs. Limitations: Higher platform costs — Impact's pricing is typically higher than ShareASale and CJ for smaller programs (monthly fees plus platform percentage); not the right choice for programs under ~$30K/month GMV where platform costs consume meaningful margin. Learning curve — Impact's interface is more complex than simpler networks; setup requires more investment. Best fit: established DTC brands with $50K+/month affiliate GMV, programs that manage both traditional publishers and influencer/media partnerships, brands prioritizing attribution accuracy over platform simplicity.

02

Awin (and ShareASale)

Awin acquired ShareASale in 2017 and operates both as distinct platforms with overlapping but different publisher networks: Awin strengths: strong European publisher network (Awin originated in Germany and has deep penetration in UK, Germany, France, and Nordics); good publisher quality in content and comparison categories; publisher dashboard preferred by many European and professional publishers. ShareASale strengths: largest US-focused publisher marketplace by publisher count (800,000+ publishers); strong penetration of small-to-mid publishers and niche content sites; lower entry cost than Impact or CJ; simpler interface that's accessible to smaller programs with limited affiliate management resources; very strong in retail and direct-to-consumer categories. ShareASale limitations: publisher network skews toward smaller publishers; less sophisticated reporting than Impact; older interface that can feel dated; publisher quality is more variable (requires more active screening). Awin limitations: setup deposit requirement ($5,000) creates an entry barrier; less US publisher depth than ShareASale's native network. Best fit: Awin for brands with European distribution priority or expansion plans; ShareASale for smaller US DTC programs launching their first affiliate program and wanting broad publisher access without high entry costs.

03

CJ (Commission Junction)

CJ is one of the oldest affiliate networks (founded 1998) and maintains a strong publisher network, particularly in financial services, retail, and performance publishing: Strengths: strong publisher relationships with major media properties and content publishers who have been in the affiliate space for 10+ years; many top-tier content affiliates prefer CJ and are not present on other networks; deep in financial services affiliate (credit cards, loans, insurance) where CJ has category leadership; good reporting and fraud detection infrastructure built over decades. Limitations: interface is dated and less intuitive than Impact or Awin; publisher recruitment tools are less sophisticated; the platform hasn't innovated as aggressively as Impact in recent years; some publishers report slower support response times. Cost structure: competitive with Awin; lower than Impact. Best fit: brands where reaching established, veteran content publishers is a priority; financial services, retail, and direct response categories where CJ has category depth; programs that want an alternative to Impact for large-scale traditional affiliate without the ShareASale quality variance.

Choosing the Right Network (or Networks)

Network selection framework: (1) Program size and budget: under $10K/month affiliate GMV → ShareASale (lowest cost, broadest publisher access); $10-50K/month → ShareASale or CJ depending on category; $50K+/month → Impact or consider dual-network with Impact + one other. (2) Publisher type priority: traditional content publishers → CJ or Awin; influencer and media partnerships → Impact; international/European publishers → Awin; broad US DTC publisher access → ShareASale. (3) Technical requirements: sophisticated cross-device tracking → Impact; simplest possible setup → ShareASale; B2B or SaaS affiliate → Impact (best partnership management for complex partner types). (4) Category: financial services → CJ; European or global retail → Awin; US DTC retail → ShareASale or Impact; enterprise brand → Impact. Running two networks simultaneously: some established programs run two networks — typically their primary network plus ShareASale for publisher breadth or CJ for specific publisher relationships; the cost is network fees on both platforms plus management complexity; justified when meaningful publisher segments are exclusive to a network you're not currently on. Single network recommendation: most programs should start with one network and add a second only when they've maximized publisher recruitment and tracking on the primary. The 'right' network is the one your target publishers are already on — survey your top 10 publisher prospects about which network they prefer before making the final selection.
