Affiliate Publisher Due Diligence: How to Evaluate Publishers Before Approval

Approving the wrong publishers creates fraud risk, compliance liability, and brand damage that takes months to unwind. A 5-minute due diligence process before every approval prevents most publisher quality problems.

01

Traffic Quality Assessment

Before approving any publisher, assess traffic quality: (1) Verify traffic volume — use SimilarWeb, Semrush, or the publisher's network application data. Be skeptical of unverified traffic claims above 500K monthly visits without third-party verification; (2) Check traffic source mix — organic search traffic (40-60%) and direct/email traffic (20-30%) indicate a real audience; 80%+ social referral traffic may indicate a paid traffic publisher who will run paid ads against your affiliate links (check your terms on paid traffic); (3) Geographic distribution — if the publisher claims a US audience but 70% of traffic is from Eastern Europe or Asia, investigate before approval; (4) Engagement signals — check their content comments section (real comments from real readers) and social media (follower count vs. engagement rate). A publisher with 50K Instagram followers and 3 likes per post has a purchased or disengaged following.

02

Content Quality Review

Read 3-5 recent articles or watch 10-15 minutes of their most-viewed video content: (1) Is the content accurate and well-researched? Affiliate publishers who create inaccurate content will create inaccurate content about your brand; (2) Is the writing/production quality consistent with the traffic claims? A site claiming 500K visits/month with one-paragraph articles and stock photos is a red flag; (3) Does the content match your brand's positioning? A luxury brand should think carefully before partnering with a deep-discount deal publisher; (4) Does the publisher disclose affiliate relationships on existing content? Publishers who don't disclose for other brands will likely not disclose for yours — FTC compliance failure is not an accident; (5) Is the content genuine or does it read as AI-generated mass content? Mass AI content sites have poor audience engagement and generate low-quality clicks.

03

Competitive Conflict Check

Check whether the publisher is an active affiliate partner for your direct competitors: (1) Look for competitor affiliate links in their recent content; (2) Check if they're listed as a top publisher on competitor network profiles (some networks make this visible); (3) Ask directly in the approval process — "Do you currently promote [competitor brands]?" An honest publisher will disclose; (4) Determine if competing partnerships create conflict — a publisher who prominently promotes a direct competitor may not give your brand fair editorial treatment. Note: publisher promotion of competitors is not inherently disqualifying — comparison publishers promote multiple brands by nature. The question is whether the publisher's editorial stance is neutral or if they have an existing commercial relationship that would bias their content against your brand.

04

Risk Scoring Framework

Score each publisher on a 1-5 scale across four dimensions before approval: (1) Traffic quality (1=unverified or suspicious, 5=third-party verified, healthy source mix); (2) Content quality (1=thin/AI/inaccurate, 5=original, researched, professional); (3) Brand alignment (1=significant category or brand value conflict, 5=perfect category and audience match); (4) Compliance posture (1=no existing disclosures visible, 5=consistent FTC-compliant disclosures on all sponsored content). Total score: 16-20 = approve; 11-15 = approve with monitoring (review content before commission payment in first 30 days); 6-10 = request more information or decline; 1-5 = decline. Document scores for all applicants — a record of your vetting process protects the brand if a publisher later creates a compliance problem.
