Affiliate Publisher Payments: Everything Brands Need to Know
Late payments, minimum thresholds, and currency issues are the top reasons publishers leave affiliate programs. Get payments right.
4 Payment Areas Every Affiliate Brand Must Get Right
Payment Schedule Standards
Industry standard is monthly net-30 (payment issued 30 days after month end). Net-60 is common but pushes publishers toward programs with faster payment. Net-15 is a competitive advantage for publisher recruitment. Set your schedule and stick to it — inconsistent payment timing damages publisher trust more than any other operational issue.
Minimum Payout Thresholds
Standard minimum: $50-$100. A $10 minimum attracts more small publishers but increases payment processing cost. A $200 minimum causes frustration for smaller publishers with low monthly earnings. Best practice: $50 minimum with ability for publishers to request immediate payment once over threshold. Network platforms (Impact, CJ) handle payment processing; brands pay the network, not individual publishers.
International Publisher Payments
International publishers need local currency payments — networks handle this automatically. Be aware of wire transfer fees for publishers in countries where PayPal or ACH is not available (some African and Southeast Asian markets require wire). Confirm your network's international payment coverage before recruiting publishers in those markets.
Commission Disputes
Handle disputes within 14 days of publisher notification. Provide the specific order ID and reversal reason for every disputed commission. Publishers who receive timely, documented reversal explanations are 3x more likely to remain in the program vs. publishers who receive unexplained reversals. Have a clear escalation path: publisher contacts AM → AM reviews → AM responds within 7 days.
