Cashback Publisher

An affiliate publisher that passes a portion of the commission it receives from brands back to consumers as cash rewards for purchases made through the publisher's platform. Cashback publishers operate at the intersection of affiliate marketing and consumer loyalty programs. How cashback publishers work: a consumer registers with a cashback platform (TopCashback, Quidco, Rakuten Rewards, ShopBack) and makes purchases through the platform's affiliate links; the cashback publisher earns affiliate commission from the brand; the publisher passes a percentage (typically 40-80%) of the commission back to the consumer as cashback; the publisher retains the remainder as margin. Role in affiliate ecosystems: UK: TopCashback and Quidco are among the largest affiliate publishers in the UK, driving substantial GMV across retail, travel, and financial services categories; Australia: Cashrewards and ShopBack Australia are the dominant cashback publishers; US: Rakuten (formerly Ebates) and Honey (PayPal) are the largest US cashback publishers. Commission economics: cashback publishers typically require higher commission rates than content publishers because they must share a portion with consumers while maintaining their own margin; brands often set lower commission rates for cashback publishers in recognition of their late-funnel positioning (capturing pre-checkout clicks) while paying higher rates to content publishers who drive introduction-phase traffic. Attribution considerations: cashback publishers operate late in the purchase funnel and capture last clicks from consumers who were already planning to purchase; new customer rate for cashback publishers is typically lower than for content publishers; brands should track cashback publisher new customer rates to assess incrementality.
