CRO Roadmap: 10 Tests That Usually Win

After running hundreds of CRO experiments across e-commerce and growth funnels, we've identified the tests that have the highest hit rate. None of them are about design. All of them are about friction.

Why Most CRO Programs Plateau

Most brands start a CRO program with high ambition and hit a wall after the first few tests. The problem: they exhaust the obvious tests (button color, hero image) without ever addressing the structural friction that actually drives drop-off.

After running hundreds of experiments across e-commerce, SaaS, and growth funnels, we've identified 10 test categories with consistently high win rates. None of them are about design. All of them are about friction.

Test 1: Above-the-Fold Value Clarity

The most common conversion killer: visitors don't immediately understand what you do or why it matters to them. Test: rewrite your hero headline to lead with the outcome the customer gets (not the feature you provide). Win rate: very high.

Test 2: Friction Audit on the Key Form

Every unnecessary form field reduces conversion. Test: remove all non-essential fields from your primary lead or purchase form. Track the quality of submissions alongside volume. Win rate: consistently positive.

Test 3: Trust Signals at the Decision Point

Buyers need permission to trust you — especially if you're not a household name. Test: add social proof (reviews, logos, certifications) immediately above or adjacent to your primary CTA. Win rate: high, especially for newer brands.

Test 4: Checkout Flow Simplification

Checkout abandonment is one of the highest-leverage drop-off points in e-commerce. Test: reduce the number of steps, eliminate guest checkout friction, and add progress indicators. Win rate: almost always positive.

Test 5: Price Anchoring

Perception of value is relative. Test: introduce a higher-priced tier or package to make your target offer feel like the reasonable middle choice. Win rate: high, particularly in SaaS and subscription models.

Test 6: Page Speed

Every second of load time reduces conversion. This isn't an experiment — it's a constant. Measure your core web vitals and set a target of under 2.5s LCP. Improvement here always lifts conversion.

Test 7: Mobile-Specific Flow

Mobile visitors convert at a fraction of desktop rates on most sites — not because they have lower intent, but because the experience wasn't designed for them. Test: audit and rebuild your mobile checkout and landing flows as a separate exercise. Win rate: very high.

Test 8: Return Policy Clarity

Uncertainty about returns kills purchase confidence. Test: make your return policy unmissable — in product pages, checkout, and confirmation flows. Win rate: positive in almost every e-commerce category.

Test 9: Exit Intent Capture

Visitors who are about to leave have already given you their attention. Test: trigger an exit-intent popup with a relevant offer (discount, free resource, or just a "wait — here's why this works" message). Win rate: mixed, but high-upside when offer is relevant.

Test 10: Post-Purchase Upsell

Your highest-converting moment is immediately after a purchase. Test: introduce a post-purchase upsell or cross-sell flow with a time-limited offer. Win rate: consistently positive, often with significant AOV impact.

The One Thing

CRO is not a one-time event. It's a continuous optimization loop. The teams that win are the ones that run the most tests — not the teams that run the biggest tests.

Start simple. Prove the method. Then compound.
