A step-by-step framework for identifying, qualifying, and onboarding affiliate publishers across T1/T2/T3 tiers.

Quick Answer

How do I find publishers for my affiliate program?

Start with your affiliate network's marketplace filtered by category EPC and content type. Then reverse-engineer which publishers are already promoting your competitors — these are your highest-probability recruits because they have proven category conversion. Supplement with targeted outreach to vertical media lists and LinkedIn contacts at relevant publications.

Where to Find Publishers

Publisher recruitment starts with knowing where quality affiliates actually live — not just where your platform directory lists them.

Platform marketplaces are the obvious starting point. Impact's partner discovery, CJ's Affiliate Vantage, and Awin's publisher directory all allow filtering by category EPC, content type, and traffic source. The mistake most brands make is stopping here. Platform directories surface publishers who are already active on that network — they miss a large pool of high-quality publishers who haven't joined yet.

Competitor reverse engineering closes that gap. Identify which publishers are promoting your top three competitors by running their brand names through tools like SimilarWeb, SEMrush, or a simple Google search for "[competitor] + discount code / review / best [category]". Publishers who already convert your category are your highest-probability recruits.

Vertical media lists are underused. Every category has 20–50 authoritative content publishers — blogs, newsletters, YouTube channels, and comparison sites — that your target buyers trust. These publishers often have no affiliate relationship with any brand in your category and will join a well-structured program quickly.

LinkedIn outreach works for finding individual publisher contacts at media companies and newsletter operators. A direct message from a brand offering a meaningful commission is more effective than a generic platform application at scale.

How to Qualify Publishers

Not every applicant deserves a commission relationship. Publisher qualification is the difference between a program full of active, incremental partners and one full of dormant accounts and coupon interceptors.

A T1 publisher (>1M MAU) brings reach but requires custom terms, dedicated creative assets, and often a guaranteed placement fee. They are worth the investment if the category fit is strong. A T2 publisher (100K–1M MAU) is typically the highest-ROI recruitment target — large enough to move volume, small enough to respond to standard outreach. T3 publishers (<100K MAU) require volume to matter but can be recruited at scale with automated sequences.

Qualify every applicant against four criteria. First, traffic source — organic search and email drive purchase intent; social referral and display traffic rarely convert affiliate links at acceptable rates. Second, content recency — a site that hasn't published in six months will not produce meaningful affiliate volume regardless of its traffic numbers. Third, category relevance — a publisher with 500K MAU in home décor is worth less to a consumer electronics brand than one with 80K MAU focused on tech reviews. Fourth, existing affiliate relationships — publishers already working with complementary brands have proven they can execute on affiliate programs.

Three Outreach Email Templates

T1 Publisher (First Contact)

Subject: [Brand] affiliate program — exclusive rate for [Publisher Name]

Body: "Hi [Name], I'm [Your Name] at [Brand]. We're expanding our affiliate program and [Publisher Name] is at the top of our list for [category]. We're offering [X]% commission with a [Y]-day cookie window — above our standard rate — plus dedicated account management and custom creative. Happy to set up a 15-minute call to discuss. Are you the right contact for publisher partnerships?"

T2/T3 Publisher (Volume Outreach)

Subject: Earn [X]% commission promoting [Brand] — [category] affiliate program

Body: "Hi [Name], [Brand] runs a [category] affiliate program on [Platform]. We're inviting publishers who [content type] to join. Commission: [X]%. Cookie: [Y] days. Creative assets ready immediately. Apply here: [link]. Questions? Reply directly."

Re-engagement (Dormant Publisher)

Subject: Your [Brand] affiliate links — quick update

Body: "Hi [Name], you joined the [Brand] affiliate program [X months] ago but we haven't seen active links yet. We've updated our creative assets and added a [Z]% performance bonus tier for publishers generating [threshold] sales/month. Here's what's new: [3 bullet points]. Want to reconnect? I can set you up with a custom content brief for [their content type]."

What to Offer First-Timers vs Established Publishers

First-time affiliate publishers — those who have never run an affiliate program before — need education more than incentives. The barrier is not commission rate; it is operational confusion about how affiliate links work, when commissions are paid, and what content is actually allowed. Lead with a clear program guide, a simple creative asset kit, and a single point of contact they can email with questions.

Established publishers know exactly what they want: competitive rates, reliable tracking, and fast payment. For established publishers joining your program for the first time, lead with rate competitiveness. If your base rate is below the category median, they will deprioritize your program regardless of relationship quality. For top-tier established publishers, negotiate placement guarantees and custom content partnerships in exchange for a higher commission floor.

Onboarding Flow

A publisher who joins your program and receives nothing in the first 48 hours will almost certainly never produce a link. The onboarding sequence is the highest-leverage moment in the publisher relationship.

Day 0 (approval): Send a welcome email with program overview, commission structure, cookie window, and a link to your creative asset library. Include one concrete content angle — "Our bestselling [product] is converting at [CVR]% for publishers in the [content type] vertical."

Day 3: Follow up with a content brief tailored to their site type. For review publishers, send a product sample request flow. For comparison publishers, send a comparison table template with your product pre-populated.

Day 7: Check in to confirm they have everything needed to publish. Offer a 15-minute call for any publisher who hasn't yet generated their first link.

Day 30: Send a performance summary — their clicks, conversions, and earnings to date — and introduce the next performance tier if relevant. This communication turns a passive affiliate relationship into an active partnership.

The publishers who receive this sequence convert to active status at 3–4× the rate of those who receive only a generic welcome email. Publisher onboarding is not a one-email event; it is a 30-day activation sequence.
